๐ The Spell Brigade Wizard System Explained
In The Spell Brigade, every run begins with choosing a wizard. Each of the 15 wizards comes with a fixed Starter Spell, a unique Passive Trait, and individual stat bonuses and penalties that shape your playstyle for the entire run. Understanding these differences is the foundation of high-level play.
Spell Unlock Progression
All wizards start each run with only their Starter Spell equipped. Additional spells unlock at level milestones: Level 5 (choose your 2nd spell from three options), Level 15 (3rd spell), and Level 25 (4th spell). Elemental Infusion slots open at Level 7 and Level 14. Campanelli's passive accelerates this by unlocking spells and infusions one level earlier than other wizards โ a significant advantage.
Wizard Traits & Stat Differences
Each wizard has meaningful stat differences beyond their spells. Ludwig starts with +12 Armor and -10% Move Speed, making him tankier but slower. The Sun Mage has -25% Hitbox Size, making her significantly harder to hit. Reginald's +2 Luck changes the quality curve of every upgrade roll. These traits are not cosmetic โ they define optimal build paths and team compositions.
Wizard Ranks & Ascension System
Completing runs with a wizard builds their Wizard Rank. Higher ranks unlock visual Wizard Badges shown to your team. Upon reaching max rank, you can Ascend a wizard โ a prestige choice that unlocks a unique Ascension Outfit and allows that wizard to start runs with a different starter spell. This system, added in 1.0, dramatically extends replayability and allows unusual spell combinations like the Wizard King starting with Falling Stars.
Team Composition in Co-op
In 4-player co-op, team composition matters enormously. A balanced team typically includes: one DPS (Star Mage or Reginald), one support/CC (Hatti or Campanelli), one utility (Maggie for relics, Bryony for XP), and a flex pick. Stacking four DPS wizards works on Moderate Threat but collapses on Hardcore due to friendly fire casualties. The Builds page has full co-op team composition recommendations.
Which Wizard Should You Play First?
New players should start with Reginald. His Luck passive reduces the penalty for making suboptimal upgrade choices โ a crucial buffer when you are still learning the game. After your first few runs with Reginald, branch into Campanelli to learn the support role, then try Star Mage when you are ready for a higher-skill, higher-reward experience. Save Ludwig, Wizard King, and Pipwick for when you fully understand the mechanics.

How many wizards are in The Spell Brigade? +
There are 15 playable wizards in The Spell Brigade 1.0: Reginald, Campanelli, Sun Mage, Kavin, Ludwig, Hatti, Aldric, Star Mage, Maggie, Bryony, Balthazar, Pipwick, Knelly, and the Wizard King. All wizards are available for solo or co-op play across all three maps.
How do you unlock all wizards in The Spell Brigade? +
Reginald and Campanelli are available by default. Most other wizards unlock by completing maps on specific Threat Levels or reaching milestones. For example, completing Frozen Ancients unlocks Ludwig. Knelly, Pipwick and Balthazar were added during Early Access and are available from those update versions onward.
What is the best wizard for beginners? +
Reginald is the #1 recommended starter wizard. His +2 Luck passive makes every upgrade roll better, and Astral Orbs is one of the most forgiving starter spells. Campanelli is a close second โ her faster level progression and revive ability make co-op runs much smoother.
Which wizard has the highest DPS in The Spell Brigade? +
The Star Mage has the highest DPS ceiling when her Falling Stars spell is fully upgraded to Level 20 with Lightning infusion. In terms of boss-killing DPS specifically, Reginald with Acid-infused Astral Orbs is the fastest boss killer.
Can two players use the same wizard? +
Yes โ The Spell Brigade allows multiple players to pick the same wizard in co-op. There is no restriction on wizard selection per session.
What does Wizard Rank do? +
Wizard Rank increases as you play with a specific wizard. Higher ranks unlock visual Wizard Badges, and at max rank you can Ascend โ a prestige system that unlocks an Ascension Outfit and lets that wizard start with a different starter spell for new playstyle options.
Who is the hardest wizard to play in The Spell Brigade? +
The Wizard King is considered the most complex wizard due to his two simultaneous signature spells and sacrifice mechanic. Ludwig is similarly challenging due to his +25% Hitbox Size penalty and sacrifice system. Pipwick (Summoner) requires constant minion positioning awareness.
