๐ฎ What Is The Spell Brigade?
The Spell Brigade is a co-op bullet heaven roguelite developed by Bolt Blaster Games, a six-person indie studio from Diepenbeek, Belgium. Released in full on April 29, 2026 (v1.0) on Steam and PS5 after 18 months in Early Access, the game supports 1โ4 players. You control a wizard fighting endless waves of magical enemies across three distinct maps, collecting XP orbs, leveling up, choosing spells, and infusing them with elements โ all while your own teammates' spells can kill you just as easily as enemy attacks.
The game draws comparison to Vampire Survivors and Brotato but its defining identity is friendly fire. Every spell hits both enemies and allies simultaneously. Mastering friendly fire โ both avoiding it and exploiting it โ is the central skill of The Spell Brigade. The game reached over 1 million players before the 1.0 release, driven almost entirely by word-of-mouth from co-op sessions.
๐ง Step 1 โ Choose Your First Wizard
Your first wizard should be Reginald, the Lucky Mage. He is available by default, rated Easy difficulty, and his +2 Luck passive fundamentally changes how you experience the upgrade system. With Reginald, every level-up rolls at higher quality โ you see more Rare and Epic options instead of Commons. This means even suboptimal choices early on are less punishing, giving you room to learn the game without being locked into terrible builds.
His starter spell, Astral Orbs, requires no aiming โ orbiting projectiles automatically seek nearby enemies. This frees your attention to learn map navigation, enemy patterns, and Objective locations rather than manual aim mechanics.
After your first 3-5 runs, try Campanelli, the Moon Mage. Her Moonerang is more skill-expressive (double-hit boomerang), and her XP bonus means you level faster than other wizards โ unlocking spells and infusions earlier. In co-op, she is the best second wizard for friends to use alongside Reginald.
๐บ๏ธ Step 2 โ Choose Your Map & Threat Level
The Spell Brigade has three maps, each with three Threat Levels (Moderate, Severe, Hardcore):
Always begin on Moderate Threat. Severe and Hardcore Threat levels dramatically increase enemy density, damage, and boss health. Unlock maps in order: Verdant Meadows โ Frozen Ancients โ Pyrestorm Pit. Do not attempt Hardcore on any map until you can consistently complete Moderate without dying.
โฌ๏ธ Step 3 โ The Level-Up System
Every time you collect enough XP orbs (dropped by enemies), you level up. Each level-up presents three upgrade choices. These can be:
- Stat bonuses โ Luck, Armor, Cooldown Reduction, Critical Damage, Move Speed, XP Gain
- Spell upgrades โ Damage, Range, Size, Cooldown for a specific spell
- New spells โ at levels 5, 15, and 25 you unlock additional spell slots
- Elemental Infusions โ at levels 7 and 14, choose an element to permanently infuse one spell
Beginner stat priority order: Luck (always first) โ Spell Level upgrades for Astral Orbs โ Cooldown Reduction โ Armor. The reasoning: Luck improves every future roll. High Luck early means seeing better options for the entire run. Never skip Luck upgrades in the first 20 levels.
You can reroll upgrade offers using Reroll tokens (earned from Objectives and kills). Save rerolls for when all three options are Common-rarity. This earns the Wise Reroller achievement and prevents wasted rerolls on already-strong offers.
โก Step 4 โ Elemental Infusion
At Level 7, your first Elemental Infusion slot opens. You choose one element to permanently apply to one of your spells. This is one of the most impactful decisions of any run. For beginners, the recommended choices are:
- Lightning on Astral Orbs (Reginald) โ Thunder burst on initial hit. Reliable, strong, no downside.
- Acid on Astral Orbs (Reginald) โ Better for bosses. Each orbit applies corrosion DoT. Use if you reach the boss phase.
- Acid on Moonerang (Campanelli) โ Double corrosion per cast (outbound + return). Excellent boss damage.
- Lightning on Falling Stars (Star Mage) โ The GOAT build. S-tier if you are already comfortable with Star Mage.
At Level 14, a second Infusion slot opens for your second spell. See the full Elements Guide for all seven element options and ten dual-element team combinations.
๐ฏ Step 5 โ Objectives & Augmentations
During each run, Objectives appear on the map โ indicated by icons. These are time-limited challenges such as "kill 50 enemies within 90 seconds in this zone" or "collect XP orbs from this area". Completing an Objective rewards an Augmentation choice โ a permanent spell modification for the rest of the run.
Augmentations are the single biggest power spikes available. Examples include:
- Seeking โ Spell automatically targets the highest-HP enemy (prioritizes elites and bosses)
- Explode โ Spell creates an explosion on hit, adding AOE to single-target spells
- Extra Projectile โ Adds +1 projectile per cast
- Healing Fire โ Converts friendly fire damage dealt to teammates into healing (game-changer in co-op)
- Frozen Echo โ Frozen enemies take an additional hit from the spell that froze them
Always prioritize Objectives. The power jump from a single augmentation often exceeds ten regular level-up upgrades combined. In co-op, assign one player as the "Objective runner" to complete challenges faster.
๐ฅ Step 6 โ Friendly Fire Basics
Friendly fire is The Spell Brigade's defining mechanic and the source of its greatest chaos and its greatest satisfaction. Every spell your wizard casts damages both enemies AND your teammates (and in solo play, some AOE spells can damage you too). This is not optional โ there is no friendly fire toggle on standard runs.
As a beginner, the most important friendly fire rules:
- Never cast Solar Pulse or Rune Burst directly on a teammate โ these AOE spells are particularly lethal
- Communicate before casting wide-area spells in co-op
- If you take friendly fire damage, move away from the source โ do not stay in a teammate's spell zone
- The Healing Fire augmentation converts your friendly fire hits on teammates into heals โ always pick this if offered in co-op
For full co-op strategies and advanced friendly fire exploitation, see the Friendly Fire Guide.
๐ Your First Run โ Quick Reference
๐ Common Beginner Mistakes
- Skipping Luck upgrades โ The most common mistake. Luck compounds across the run. Always prioritize it first.
- Spreading upgrades evenly โ Focus your primary spell to Spell Level 20 rather than spreading upgrades across four spells equally. Depth beats breadth.
- Ignoring Objectives โ Objectives yield augmentations, the biggest power jumps in the game. Always complete them.
- Standing still in Pyrestorm Pit โ Lava deals constant damage if you stop. Keep moving at all times.
- Choosing wizards randomly โ Start with Reginald. His Luck passive makes learning much smoother. Resist the urge to play Ludwig or Wizard King before understanding basic mechanics.
- Picking the wrong element โ For beginners: Lightning for general use, Acid specifically for boss fights. Do not pick Fire or Dark until you understand the dual-element combo system.
- Forgetting to Reroll wisely โ Only use Reroll tokens when all three offers are Common rarity. Rerolling a mix of Rare + Common is a waste.

โ The Spell Brigade Beginner's Guide โ FAQ
What should I do in my very first run of The Spell Brigade? +
Pick Reginald, choose Verdant Meadows on Moderate Threat. Always pick Luck upgrades when offered. At Level 7, infuse Astral Orbs with Lightning. Focus on surviving 12 minutes. Don't worry about optimization โ your first goal is to reach the boss Sol'phish.
How does friendly fire work in The Spell Brigade? +
All spells in The Spell Brigade deal damage to both enemies AND teammates. There is no way to disable this. In solo play, AOE spells like Solar Pulse and Rune Burst can damage you. Certain augmentations convert friendly fire into healing โ the best known is the Healing Fire augmentation.
How do I unlock new wizards? +
Reginald and Campanelli are available from the start. Others unlock by completing specific maps at specific Threat Levels. Completing Frozen Ancients unlocks Ludwig. Most wizards unlock naturally as you progress through the three maps on Moderate and Severe Threat.
What are augmentations and how do I get them? +
Augmentations are powerful spell modifications earned by completing in-run Objectives โ time-limited challenges that appear during runs. Each completed Objective offers an augmentation choice. They fundamentally change spell behavior and are the biggest power spikes in any run.
Is The Spell Brigade hard for beginners? +
The Spell Brigade is moderately accessible on Moderate Threat with Reginald. Difficulty spikes significantly on Severe and Hardcore. Most beginners should expect 5-10 runs before understanding the upgrade system well enough to consistently reach bosses.
What map should beginners start with? +
Always start with Verdant Meadows. Minimal hazards, predictable enemy patterns, and the most forgiving boss (Sol'phish). Unlock Frozen Ancients next, then tackle Pyrestorm Pit last โ lava and tornado hazards punish positional errors severely.
What does the Luck stat do in The Spell Brigade? +
Luck improves the quality tier of upgrade offers at each level-up. Higher Luck means more Rare and Epic upgrades instead of Common ones. It also improves Health Potion and Magnet find rates. Luck is universally the best stat to invest in first โ its value compounds across the entire run.
